Thanks, Jim. Just one comment : genocide was never in question. Unlike what had
happened in other colonial settings , the question was rather a civil rights one

. A reason for this is that S.Africa was not a colonial state but a state in
which a people lived for hundreds of years and had no where to go "back" to.
Moreover, with the exception of the Zulu to the north, they preceded the black
population (who actually "voted with their feet" by coming from the north to get
work, mainly in the service and mining industries ). Moreover, both the numbers
involved (when one considers the English , Indian community , and mixed race
Africana speaking group ) and the strength of the state precluded any such
resolution. This , of course, is not to say that Apartheid was not a horror, and
that Mandela did not have one of the star roles in its peaceful dismantling. If
there was something that contributed to my own leaving of that country , it was
the fear that Apartheid would persist for a long time and end with a kind of
African Mississippi. I will go see the movie , however, once it is here . See
you tonight. Jonathan.

And it is now posted: http://www.historyplace.com/specials/reviews/index.html
Caught a big break with the storm as it passed entirely southward of the Boston
area.

Best regards,
