Like Senator Joe McCarthy a half century ago, the National Rifle Association today wields influence in Washington and our state capitals far beyond anything the organization deserves. The NRA is on the defensive following the recent shootings. Even so, yesterday, after meeting with Veep Biden, its leaders announced they would no longer participate in the White House effort to reach some reasonable solutions to America's gun problem. The NRA's intractable stance on guns is not only unique in the U.S., but in the entire developed worlds. It's high time we cut off the organization's political testicles and put this gelding out to the pastures of history.
