Dear Jim,
The Washington Post reported1 that the White House is considering a stronger response to the Sandy Hook massacre than simply reinstating the ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004. But that will depend on whether pushback from the National Rifle Association (NRA) is strong enough to shake the courage of a task force led by Vice President Joe Biden.
The task force is considering common sense gun regulations that include background checks whenever a gun is sold, allowing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to track all gun sales, a ban on assault weapons, and a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines, among other initiatives. Vice President Biden will provide the recommendations to President Obama on Tuesday.
The White House appears to want to fast track sensible gun regulation, but faces fierce opposition and organizing by the NRA. The president will need our help to overcome opposition from the NRA which has a strong grip on many of our federal legislators.
After the last major gun massacres in the country, momentum faded as time passed and Congressmembers were held hostage by the demands of the NRA. Only a fast and overwhelming push from the White House to act on a strong set of recommendations of the gun violence task force will ensure that doesn't happen again.
Gun violence is an epidemic that has been sustained by the NRA, an organization which acts as a front for gun manufacturers.2 Since the massacre of 20 first graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, over 695 people have been killed by guns in America, a number that climbs each and every day.3
The NRA started their assault on the recommendations yesterday, after a meeting with Biden and members of the task force, saying — in direct contrast to the opinion of the American public — that these recommendations "attack" the second amendment.4 NRA members are packing Congressional town halls and the organization continues to oppose any real action to protect us from gun violence.
Americans can put an end to the reign of terror that the NRA has enforced on the country, but to make that happen, we need to organize and let the decision makers know we want immediate and strong action.
Tell Joe Biden's gun violence task force: Don't let the NRA water-down your recommendations.

Thank you for standing up to the NRA.
