Dear Jim,
It's hard to believe that just over a month ago a presidential spokesman said "this is not the time" to talk about federal action on guns.
But because of activists like you who signed petitions, made phone calls and marched in the streets, the president this week made a game-changing announcement.
If enacted, the bold agenda he unveiled — which was proposed by Vice President Joe Biden's task force — would be a significant victory for advocates of stronger gun laws.
The plan announced by the president on Wednesday would not only ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazine clips, but it would also mandate background checks every time a gun is sold and make arms trafficking a federal crime.
It's been over a quarter of a century since we've had a victory on the federal level on the regulation of dangerous guns.
But in just the last month over 415,000 CREDO Action members have signed petitions, made phone calls and marched in the streets.
And this is after over a quarter of a million members signed petitions and made 2,345 calls to the White House demanding a reinstatement of the assault weapons ban after the Aurora, Colorado, massacre in a movie theater.
CREDO has been leading the charge calling on the NRA to stand down since the Newtown massacre of 20 first graders and six educators. We're going directly at the NRA because we believe that we must reign in the power of gun makers and their lobbyists if we're going to be able to pass any federal legislation regulating guns.
Since 1985, CREDO has been fighting for sensible gun regulations. We helped pass the first ban on assault weapons in 1994. And have been fighting to reinstate the ban since it expired in 2004. Our members have donated over $800,000 to groups working to end gun violence.
The president and vice president's bold plan can't be achieved without a major push to ensure that Congress is accountable to the people, not NRA lobbyists. Currently CREDO is fighting the NRA on multiple fronts.
CREDO led an emergency march on the NRA following the Newtown massacre and protested outside the NRA's first public appearance following the shootings. Photos of our signs and protesters are still being used in national media like the New York Times to symbolize public support for gun regulations.
You've been a huge part of the national momentum that is finally making possible meaningful action on guns. Thank you for being a part of CREDO Action and helping us fight back against the NRA. President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden need our help to pass their bold plan to address gun violence in this country. We'll be in touch with more opportunities to take action.
Together we can make this happen.
