The Chinese and Oil: America's Biggest Strategic Challenge?

IraqIraq (Photo credit: slagheap)The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in the wake of FDR's embargo of oil shipments to Japan.  The First Gulf War was all about oil, and some would say the 2003 US invasion of Iraq was, too.

The Chinese are putting cars on their streets in record numbers.  When I visited Shanghai regularly in the early 2000s, the streets swarmed with bikes.  When I went back last March, the bikes had mostly made way for more cars.

For this reason and others, the Chinese need lots and lots of oil.  And that makes China a strategic threat to Uncle Sam.
