Should You Consider Being a Politician?

Should You Go Into Politics? Four Signs You'd be Great for Government
Growing up, I never understood the temptations of entering the cut-throat political arena. Year after year of watching elections and political campaigns on television, I'd look on as politicians like George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Al Gore, and Newt Gingrich stood in front of the United States spouting their political beliefs and words of wisdom. Though they seemed so confident, intelligent, calm, and collected, I couldn't imagine why anyone would want to put him or herself through so much stress and anguish. Not only was the political world full of tireless work and harsh criticism, it has very few rewards. As I've grown older, I've come to understand that there are certain qualities and quirks that make a person engineered for becoming a great politician. For those of you who are wondering if you might make a good political candidate someday, here are four signs that indicate you're prepared to start climbing the political ladder.
Forms personal beliefs
There is nothing worse in this world than when someone subscribes to an ideology without truly understanding what it is he or she believes in. There are a lot of politicians who will say, do, and believe anything their political party tells them to, but that doesn't make them a good politician. The best politicians, leaders, and public figures are ones that seek out the truth and cultivate their own beliefs, whether it's through research, experience, readings, religious beliefs, etc.
Understands economics
It would be easy to be a great politician if all that mattered was having a set of political beliefs. Money, however, is one of the most important things to understand when it comes to being a well-rounded politician. Before you ever think of entering into politics, make sure you have a firm grasp of economic principles, theories, and solutions. If you don't, then you need to get some experience with economics. Keep in mind, the most important way to prove you understand economics is to manage your own finances well. If you have a poor credit score and can barely make rent on time, it's unlikely you'll be able to handle millions or billions of dollars any better.
Thinks on behalf of the majority
We all have our own personal beliefs that we carry within us throughout our lives. Yet we all learn at some point that our personal beliefs don't always align with other people's beliefs.  In order to be a good politician, you must sometimes put aside your own personal beliefs to do what's good for the majority. Remember, we live in a democratic society and the only way to honor that system is to go with what the majority of people say they want – even if we don't necessarily agree with what they believe.

Negotiates well
Everyone can get along with his or her closest friend. Only the most tolerant people in the world can get along with their greatest enemy. Let's face it, in order to be a good politician you must know how to negotiate well with everyone. In order to do that, you'll have to be able to sit around talking to and negotiating with some people you don't like that much. So if you haven't cultivated tolerance, patience, and negotiation, I'd say try and learn those traits before you ever decide to venture into politics.
Though it may seem like an intimidating process at first, there are some people out there who are simply meant to become politicians. If you're considering making your way into the political arena anytime soon, make sure you have these four necessary qualities at your disposal.
