Nonprofit Issues® and the Philadelphia law firm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads will present the 21st annual "This Year in Nonprofit Law" on Tuesday, November 15, 2011.
What keeps nonprofit directors up at night - or should?
The Great Recession has changed the game for nonprofit organizations. As money has gotten tighter, nonprofits are focusing more than ever on sustainability.
How can we build sustainable nonprofits? What keeps members of the board awake at night - or should?
Our panel of three experienced nonprofit leaders will examine these questions in their session on critical issues of nonprofit governance. They will discuss:
* fiscal sustainability, including the role of the board and social media in fundraising;
* measuring the impact of programs with Guidestar's five questions; and
* assuring proper governance oversight, including board self-evaluation and succession planning for board and staff.
The panelists are:
* Vicki Kramer, founder and co-director of a nonprofit for more than 20 years, a member of many nonprofit boards, a researcher, and consultant to nonprofits on organizational effectiveness.
* Nancy Moses, former executive director of the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia, founder of several nonprofit organizations, a pioneer in social and cultural marketing in the region, and a consultant on nonprofit planning and development.
* Charles Sterne III, Director of Principal Gifts and Planned Giving at the Curtis Institute of Music, former foundation executive and a past president of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning of Greater Philadelphia.
The governance panel will follow the annual update on specific nonprofit law developments by Montgomery, McCracken lawyers who work with nonprofits every day, and will continue with informal lunchtime discussions with several of the panelists.
Following the lunch, there will be two sets of three breakout sessions. The first set will cover the impact of social media on employment law, helping the charitably inclined donor, and a reprise of the "annual meeting" of the LOST organization where everything goes wrong.
The second set will offer a session on the new communications requirements under health care reform, one on charitable gifts of insurance that work, and some that don't, and a session on ethical issues for lawyers in dealing with social media.
The program provides 5 hours of continuing education credit for Pennsylvania lawyers, including an hour of ethics credit for those attending the ethics session, and 5 hours of CPE for Pennsylvania accountants.
Participants will receive a new or renewed one-year subscription to Nonprofit Issues®, plus program materials. The program starts at 9 a.m. and runs until 3:45 p.m.. The registration fee is $155, but additional registrants from the same organization may attend for $85. Lawyers requesting Pennsylvania CLE must pay an additional $10 for processing. We will provide you with lunch and materials. Register now, space is limited.
