The ebb and flow of the Chic-fil-A controversy underlines the dilemma posed to academe

Gay-rights advocates continue to try to push Chic-fil-A off their campuses in the wake of the company's anti-gay marriage stance.

Meanwhile, others in the academy are concerned about the damage done to First Amendment rights, if the coporation is persecuted for its position.  Consequently, free-speech advocates have criticized efforts by some government entities, such as municipalities which deny business licences or building permits to the company.

Protests, pro and con, at Chic-fil-A restaurants across the contry indicate that the populace is as divided over the company's stance as it is over just about every other moral issue in America today.

Dispassionate Chic-fil-A shareholders, if there are any, might reasonably ask why the corporation's leadership is embroiled in this mess in the first place.
