And, wasting no time, the trustees name a replacement; here's the university's press release:

Donald J. Farish Appointed 10th President of Roger Williams University

Esteemed educator, scientist and attorney Donald J. Farish, Ph.D., has been appointed the 10th president of Roger Williams University, effective June 6, 2011.

Chairman Richard L. Bready introduced Dr. Farish as the president-elect at a campus community event on Mar. 29, 2011. The appointment of Dr. Farish marks the culmination of a truly participatory search process that resulted in a unanimous recommendation across all segments of the RWU community.

Dr. Farish is the current president of Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., and joins the University with an illustrious track record spanning more than 40 years in higher education, including 11 years as a full-time faculty member. He is a passionate educator and an inspirational leader, and he embodies the values – love of learning, civil discourse, service and sustainability – that drive the mission of Roger Williams University.

“Even before I set foot on campus, I felt very much in sync with the values to which Roger Williams University is committed – diversity and civil discourse, service to the community, a student-centered approach and a high-quality educational product,” Dr. Farish says. “RWU embodies everything I’ve stood for and worked for my entire career. To be invited to lead this campus is a singular honor and truly a privilege.”

A Harvard-educated biologist and former associate dean at the University of Rhode Island, Dr. Farish has significant ties to New England. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Dr. Farish immigrated to the United States in 1963 to pursue his graduate education after receiving his bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of British Columbia. He holds a master of science in entomology from North Carolina State University, a Ph.D. in biology from Harvard University and a juris doctor from the University of Missouri. A respected expert in his field, Dr. Farish is the author of six biology textbooks and has authored and co-authored numerous articles on entomology and animal behavior.

During his tenure at Rowan, Dr. Farish transformed the respected regional institution into a world-class university known for its innovative academic programs. Along the way, he elevated the school from second tier to top tier, where it is ranked third among public master's level universities in the North by U.S. News & World Report. He also created incentive programs to enhance student-faculty interaction and established a plan to bring an additional 50 tenure-track faculty members to the university.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Farish has also held academic and administrative positions at Sonoma State University, the University of Rhode Island and the University of Missouri. A sought-after voice in higher education, Dr. Farish served as one of 20 presidents and chancellors at a 2010 Presidential Roundtable hosted by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education to discuss the future of colleges and universities in the U.S.

Dr. Farish and his wife, Maia, will relocate from the Rowan University president’s home in Woodbury, N.J., to the Roger Williams University residence in Bristol.
