Bigger Private-Sector Role Recommended for Middle East

Middle Eastern countries need to look to the private sector to help educate their young people and prepare them for the job market, argues a report, "Education for Employment: Realizing Arab Youth Potential," sponsored by the World Bank's International Finance Corporation and by the Islamic Development Bank.

The Middle East has the highest youth unemployment rate in the world, the report notes, at over 25 percent. In the past few months, "the frustration of young people has spilled onto the streets," said Queen Rania of Jordan, honorary chairwoman of the Employment For Education initiative, which she called "a new regional paradigm."

First they need to educated. But then they also must be employed... in jobs that provide career satisfaction as well as good salaries and benefits. Education without employment opportunities equates to a well-educated terrorist. That's been a problem across the Arab world and is reflected in the current agitation.
