From the Chronicle of Higher Education:
Professor Resigns as President-Elect of Surgeons’ Group After Misguided Joke
April 18, 2011, 12:59 pm
Lazar J. Greenfield, president-elect of the American College of Surgeons, resigned his position Sunday, according to the medical blog Retraction Watch, following complaints about his St. Valentine’s Day-related editorial in Surgery News, which touted “the benefits of semen contact” for women. The editorial appeared to be intended as humorous, but several readers did not find it so, especially in a profession that has been troubled by charges of male chauvinism. Dr. Greenfield, who has actually been commended for his role as a mentor to female surgeons, remains an emeritus professor of surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School.
