State Department Official Resigns After Criticizing Treatment of Manning
Clinton aide P.J. Crowley unexpectedly resigned Sunday after speaking too candidly about the imprisonment of suspected WikiLeaks source Bradley Manning. Crowley called Manning's treatment by the Defense Department "ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid" at a talk with a small group at MIT last week, reports CNN. Crowley added that Manning is "in the right place," but his caveat could not save him from the White House, which pressured him to leave the State Department following his comments. "The exercise of power in today's challenging times and relentless media environment must be prudent and consistent with our laws and values," Crowley said in a statement. "Given the impact of my remarks, for which I take full responsibility, I have submitted my resignation." Crowley, a respected long-time State Department employee and former National Security Council spokesman, has emphasized to friends that he is worried about the effect any mistreatment of Manning might have on the Obama administration's reputation.
