Dear Jim,
The ACLU's persistence — and yours — just paid off again. Earlier this week, a federal appeals court reinstated our landmark lawsuit challenging the FISA Amendments Act (FAA).
We've been working to end out-of-control government spying for years. And every time it looks like we've been stymied or blocked, our lawyers roll up their sleeves and find another way to win.
That determination to defend the Constitution has led to a number of big breakthroughs. We challenged Florida's ban on gay adoption for three decades before finally overturning it. We took on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" for 17 years before finally bringing it to an end. And it took years of difficult work against daunting odds to overturn Illinois' death penalty statute.
Now, with our new fiscal year starting in just six days, we're gearing up to take on equally daunting challenges — and we are as determined as ever to add more hard-earned victories to our track record.
Help the ACLU keep up our unwavering defense of civil liberties. Donate today to help us reach our $500,000 goal by March 31st.
We've got our hands full right now as the ACLU leads the charge against relentless and vicious extremist assaults on our rights. As we plan for the year ahead, it is essential that we have the resources we need to keep up the fight on every front.
* From House-passed legislation seeking to bar Planned Parenthood from receiving a single dime of federal support ...
* ... to countless state-based attacks on reproductive rights — including an outrageous South Dakota law requiring women to visit anti-abortion "crisis pregnancy centers" before having an abortion ...
* ... from assaults on students' religious liberty, including a Tennessee creationism proposal that could open the door for teachers who want to bring their religious views into public school classrooms ...
* ... to Speaker Boehner's decision to step in and argue for the disgraceful and unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in federal court ...
... the attacks on our civil liberties just keep coming, and we've got to be prepared to take them on.
Please make a donation to help us reach our goal of raising $500,000 before the end of our fiscal year.
In these challenging times for civil liberties, each of us must choose between standing on the sidelines worried about what's happening to our country — or jumping into the fray and fighting for what we believe in.
You know what choice the ACLU always makes. We fight to protect our fundamental freedoms — no matter how long it takes until we win.
I hope you'll make a generous gift today and stand with the ACLU as we gather the strength to keep challenging those out to undermine our civil liberties.
Thanks for all you do,
Anthony D. Romero
