But I'll bet he's not living on $8.50 per hour.
In real dollars, the minimum wage was at its peak --- $10+ in today's bucks --- in 1968 under LBJ and his War on Poverty. It began to lose ground during the Reagan years… no surprise there. Interesting, it has usually been a by-partisan issue with Nixon signing a new minimum wage into law and even Newt Gingrich pushing an increase through Congress in his day. So the so-called do-nothing Congress --- by which he must really mean the tealiban minority that blocks everything in the House --- is a new low in American politics… a low that reflects the increasing gap between the haves and have-nots in 21st century America.
