Friend -- 2014 has begun, but I want to share an excellent short piece that you may have missed during the busy holiday period, “A Historical Perspective on Occupy.” Occupy Wall Street lost steam. And Congress’ allowing unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed to expire, or slashing funding for food stamps, are urgent and immediate political problems. But we also need to have an understanding of WHY we keep losing many of these fights, and a long-term plan to strategically build power to demand an alternative economic system. In the piece, Young Democratic Socialists organizer Neal Meyer explains that a critical lesson of Occupy Wall Street is that we need to rebuild political organizations like DSA that help support movements. We need to build “schools in the history and theory of movements” that “bring activists and intellectuals together.” It’s a quick but powerful article. I hope you have a few moments to read it now, and share with friends. Then, let’s get revved up for a great 2014!
