Mergers seem to be anathema to folks in the Garden State. Despite having the highest property taxes in America, they insist on maintaining a multitude of small municipalities and school districts with all the redundant costs these tin-pot fiefdoms entail.
Christie is not the first governor to try to consolidate the state's public university systems in order to get more bang for the taxpayers' bucks. But, as with municipalities and school districts, these efforts thus far have all been abortive.
