James -- President Obama took a historic stand for equality this week. It's one of the defining moments of his presidency, and an emotional moment for me personally. I've heard from many folks over the past few days who are proud to have a leader who believes that all people in loving, committed relationships should be able to marry their partner. The stakes are clear in November -- voters will be choosing between a President who supports legalizing same-sex marriage and a candidate who supports an amendment to the U.S. Constitution banning it. In this week's tipsheet, we have a few items that lay clear the difference between President Obama and Mitt Romney on marriage equality and other issues. Check them out, and share with others: #1: Video: On marriage equality, Romney would take America backwards Mitt Romney has made it clear that he opposes same-sex marriage. However, he isn't just against moving forward on marriage equality. He opposes civil unions -- which even George W. Bush supported -- and would allow states to eliminate a whole range of equal rights and benefits for same-sex couples, including the right to make emergency medical decisions for a partner. We made a video that looks at some of the stances Romney has taken on marriage equality. Watch and share it here: #2: Writing discrimination in the Constitution Throughout our country's history, we've only used federal constitutional amendments to expand equal rights. But Mitt Romney wants to do the opposite -- he supports a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman. If passed, this would override existing state laws allowing same-sex marriage, and prevent courts from guaranteeing LGBT couples the same rights as their fellow Americans. Share our blog post with others, and let them know exactly what Romney's position on same-sex marriage would mean for our country: #3: "Let Detroit go bankrupt" When I heard that Romney had said that he takes "a lot of credit" for the auto industry's recovery under President Obama, I thought it was a joke. But yes, Romney actually said this in an interview this week, and I guess he thinks there are people out there who will take this seriously. Unfortunately for him, he repeatedly said that we should have "let Detroit go bankrupt." Folks remember that. But now that President Obama's plan to save the American auto industry has been vindicated, Romney seems to think he can convince people that the plan that saved Detroit was his all along. This week, we madea video showing what Romney had been saying about the auto industry. We can't let Romney get away with this revision, so we need to share this video far and wide: After you check out our video, be sure to take a look at what former Ohio governor and Truth Team member Ted Strickland had to say in response to Romney's "new low in dishonesty": #4: Our new TV ads As we saw last week, our opponents are going to run a lot of dishonest attack ads against us this year. So in order to get the truth out in front of voters, we launched apositive ad this week that lays out President Obama's record and looks at how far we've come over the past few years. We also went up with two ads ("Succeed" and"Brian from Ohio") looking at recovery of the auto industry, and another ( "Reverse") that highlights 26 straight months of private sector job growth under President Obama. Take a look, and share the video with your friends and family: This has been a big week. President Obama made history. But Mitt Romney wants to make history, too -- by pushing to amend our Constitution for the first time to make it more discriminatory. It seems like the choice we have in this election gets clearer and clearer, and on this issue, the difference is pretty stark: Our guy wants to move this country forward. Romney wants to take us back. Thanks for keeping us moving in the right direction. Until next week, Stephanie P.S. -- We created a Facebook graphic to celebrate President Obama's historic announcement on same-sex marriage. Share it on your wall here. |
