HNS ALERT: The Politics of "Constitutionalism"
With the rise of the Tea Party and the new Republican majority in the House
of Representatives, the U.S. Constitution has taken center stage in national
politics. It seems that nearly every policy, every goal on the conservative
agenda is being framed as a Constitutional issue. Many historians have
already responded with good pieces on constitutional history and the perils
of "originalism." But it seems to me that there's still much more to be
said about how the politics of "Constitutionalism" have played out at
various moments in the past. This is such a big, ongoing debate that I
think historians need to keep contributing to it.
