Why did the funniest man in the world kill himself?

I'm not generally a fan of stand-up comedians.  But Williams's '02 Broadway show is unforgettable.  I still can watch it two or three times a year a die laughing.  The best bit: how the Scotts invented golf:

Beloved… envied… idolized… imitated… and dead at 63 by his own hand.

It shakes me up.  It depresses me. Why would he?
