James,
Do you have health insurance?
If you or someone you care about doesn’t have insurance, you still have the opportunity to obtain full coverage by January 1. I want to take this moment – right now – to tell you a story about why this matters, a story that really struck me.
On January 1, millions of people will gain access to health insurance, many for the first time.
One of those people is Jerry. Jerry works full time as a nursing home dietary aide in West Palm Beach, Florida. He’s a single father, raising his two children, Jamillion and Ky-Mani. Without health insurance, Jerry has missed days of work and often been unable to afford treatment options. During a recent throat infection, Jerry simply went without medication because he couldn’t pay the cost out of pocket. But one month ago, through the Affordable Care Act, he was able to find insurance that was within his budget. He’s now counting down the days to January 1, when he’ll finally have health insurance and the peace of mind to know he and his kids can see the doctor when needed.
If you or someone you love does not currently have health insurance, I want to make sure you receive the same opportunity that Jerry had. You have until December 23 - which is less than two weeks from now - to sign up and be one of the early adopters of new health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.
We should all have the right and ability to seek better health. On January 1, we will.
In solidarity, Mary Kay Henry SEIU
