How do you square the trend toward legalization of marijuana with the Fourth Amendment?

Herewith a thoughtful article on that issue:

In Colorado, most universities have banned marijuana use on their campuses, despite its legalization.  But what to do about violators?  Is pot smoking now no more serious a violation than underaged drinking among the students?

What about states where medicinal use is legitimate?  I suppose you treat marijuana like any other prescription drug.

The DOJ says it will not enforce the federal law to the extent a particular state has legalized marijuana.  But what if a federal officer acts on his/her own?
