During my daily commutes I'm listening to WIlliam Manchester's terrific book, The Glory and the Dream, which is a history of the US from 1932-1972.  Nobody could have had a tougher second term than Harry Truman.  It was the era of the second red scare.  Republicans, who lost the White House (for the fifth time in a row) and both houses of the Congress, were like rabid dogs.  Leading the pack was Richard Nixon.  The Tealiban has nothing on these guys.

The Dems were being blamed for the loss of China.  Secretary of State Dean Acheson was dubbed "the Red Dean."  And the witch hunt had begun.

Hearing this history, I wonder whether the Tealiban's roots don't run much deeper in the Not-so-Grand Old Party than I ever realized before now.
