The Supreme Five have another opportunity to widen the gap between the rich and the rest today

The McCutcheon case is seen as the sequel to Citizens United.  In the latter case, the court said that contributors can pump as much money into PACs as they wish.  It's the rich folks' constitutional right.  Now an Alabama business man wants the court to strike down the $123,000/2-year limit on how much a fat cat like him can contribute to individual candidates. This limit has lasted 40 years, but now...

Yes, you can argue that we all have the same First Amendment rights.  It reminds me of arguments made about employment at will.  Both the employer and the employee can end the relationship anytime and for any reason.  Sounds like equality, right?  However, if the employee has no bargaining power, then the right is pretty one sided.  Similarly, if we have no money, the right to give as much as we want to whomever we want is pretty empty.

America is unique among western nations for the employment at will doctrine.  We are unique for our Second Amendment right to shoot each other willy nilly.  And we soon may be unique in our right to give millions, even billions to candidates of our choosing.  As the gap between the rich and the rest of us continues to widen and the population continues to grow, our individual voices in politics will necessarily be drowned to whispers. Likewise, in the workplace, individual and collective rights have been eroded, as unions decline to levels of a century ago and good jobs disappear.

In the end, will the desperate be left with only their Second Amendment right to bear... and use... arms?

Now there's a scary thought!
