John Boehner and House Republicans: Hands off Social Security and Medicare | |
The petition John Boehner, Paul Ryan and the rest of the House Republicans reads: "Your attempt to use the government shutdown and the threat of a default on our national debt to exact concessions from the Democrats is nothing less than hostage-taking. Any attempt to use this crisis, which you created, to cut Social Security, Medicaid or Medicare benefits would only add another shameful layer to your already reckless and deeply irresponsible behavior."

Dear Jim,
The extremist Republican hostage-takers in the House who have irresponsibly and recklessly caused the government shutdown have now set their sights on attacking Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Earlier this week, 50 House Republicans sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner demanding cuts to Social Security benefits as part of any deal to end the government shutdown and avert a potential government default on our national debt. That same day, Rep. Paul Ryan had an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal calling for "reforms of the country's entitlement programs," which we know are just code words for slashing Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits. We need to send a clear message to John Boehner, Paul Ryan and the rest of the House Republicans: "Hands off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits!" Click here to automatically sign the petition. Although their attempts to defund the Affordable Care Act have received most of the headlines recently, House Republicans have a longstanding and very public record of relentlessly trying to slash Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare benefits. So while it may not be surprising that House Republicans are putting cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits on their list of ransom demands, it is still deeply, deeply shameful. And we shouldn't give them a pass on this. Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are extremely vital, and extremely successful, parts of our social safety net. Yet House Republicans are cynically using a crisis that they created as an excuse to undermine and destroy these programs. With House Republicans already suffering from record-low public approval ratings, now is the time to make sure they feel the heat about trying to attack Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Send a clear message to John Boehner, Paul Ryan and the rest of the House Republicans: "Hands off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits!"
