Evolution, the Bell Curve, and the Tealiban

Out for dinner last night and the talk turned to the "No Child Left Behind" Law... which, along with two decade-long wars and an historically high deficit, comprises George W. Bush's presidential legacy.

One of my companions at dinner remarked that the law ignores, or denies, the existence of a bell curve re: student potential.

Reflecting later on that, it occurred to me that this law originated with the same wing nuts who deny the evidence favoring evolution... who insist that evolution is just one more unproven theory, at best only equal to creationism.

As Jeff Daniels' character noted in the opening scene of the first episode of "The Newsroom," America today leads the world in only three things: amount spent on our military, number of citizens incarcerated per capita... and the number of people who believe in angels.

The Taliban and Al Qaeda are a bunch of religious fanatics, who will kill anyone who won't convert and conform.

The Tea Party are a bunch of people who will wreck the government and America's leadership role in world finance, just to scuttle a healthcare program sponsored by a black president.

Hmmm... aren't these both good examples of political/religious extremism?

Would the Tealiban hold executions in our ballparks --- like the Taliban used to do in Kabul's soccer stadium --- if they ever got the chance?  I wonder.
