Yesterday – joined by Carie Lemack, cofounder of Global Survivors Network; Mary Fetchet, Executive Director of Voices of September 11th; and Stephanie Cowin, Program Manager of Voices of September 11th – Secretary Napolitano hosted a conference call with family members of 9/11 victims, following the release of the DHS 2011 Progress Report on Implementing 9/11 Commission Recommendations. During the call she provided an overview of the progress the Department and our partners have made since 9/11 to secure the nation, and engaged in a conversation and Q&A with the call participants.

CBP Officers in El Paso Capture Murder Suspect

July 20, 2011 (El Paso, Texas) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Yselta international crossing in El Paso have arrested a man wanted with a 2009 killing in Socorro, Texas. The apprehension was made after CBP officers recognized the man as a target of local law enforcement. The arrest was made after 30-year-old Joe Ivan Alarcon arrived from Mexico as a pedestrian and only provided a name to CBP officers. More at CBP.gov

CBP Arrests 39 Undocumented Aliens in Puerto Rico

July 20, 2011 (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents arrested 39 undocumented aliens from Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Ecuador yesterday, found illegally in four separate events. The total count of undocumented aliens arrested by Border Patrol are: 24 Cuban, 14 Dominican Republic, and 1 Ecuadorian. More at CBP.gov

Border Patrol Rescues Eight from Harsh Sonoran Desert

July 19, 2011 (Tucson, Ariz.) - In six separate incidents over the weekend, Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents rescued a total of eight people from the desert after they illegally entered the United States. On Friday, Casa Grande Station agents encountered an illegal alien near Mile Marker 87 on State Route 86. The man requested medical attention after claiming to have ingested methamphetamines several hours prior to his apprehension. More at CBP.gov

Peruvian Army Major Wanted for his Participation in the Death of 69 Unarmed Men, Women, and Children Extradited

July 14, 2011 (Lima, Peru) - A former Peruvian Army major was successfully extradited from Miami to Lima, Peru for his role in the 1985 murders of 69 unarmed men, women, and children in Accomarca, located in the southern province of Ayachucho, Peru. He arrived at the Jordge Chavez International Airport on July 14, where he was placed in custody by the Peruvian National Police. Telmo Richardo Hurtado- Hurtado, 50, was wanted by Peruvian authorities for homicide stemming from his role in the "Accomarca Massacre." More at ICE.gov
