Bully for them: National Adjunct Org offers its members affordable health insurance

Welcome to New Faculty Majority’s health insurance initiative! Our goal is to provide access to health insurance to all adjunct and contingent faculty in the country. This initial plan provides some level of medical insurance for most NFM members. As NFM has worked through this insurance process, we have learned that for various reasons including that we do not have a mandatory dues structure, the type of insurance we can offer is limited.

NFM has contracted with an insurance carrier to provide limited medical indemnity coverage for members in 37 states and the District of Columbia. Those states are listed below. This Core Health Benefits flyer provides a summary of benefits for the four levels of coverage – from low to high – offered.

For more information about limited medical indemnity plans, click here to access the short presentation called "Understanding Limited Medical Indemnity Insurance." You may also contact Tracy Donhardt, NFM Board member, at tracy.donhardt@newfacultymajority.infoThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. For members in the remaining 13 states not currently covered by this plan, know that we continue to look for a carrier able to offer you some form of coverage. As we gather this information, we will add it to this page. Information for New Jersey is already listed below.

Still, this is progress and while the levels of coverage offered are less than that offered with traditional employer-sponsored group benefits, it’s a step in the right direction. As NFM matures and eventually institutes a mandatory dues structure instead of our current suggested dues and donation structure, we’ll be in a position to offer a more traditional group medical insurance plan with even better rates.

To enroll, visit SASid’s website. Your rate as an NFM member is set and is based on the level of coverage you select. (See the flyer referenced above for rates.) However, SASid also provides health insurance to individuals and other associations and so their site is somewhat generic. This means that to enroll, you should first select “Get Your Personalized Quote Below.” When you do that, assuming you are in one of the 38 states with coverage, the rate you receive will match the rate listed in the flyer. Of course, if it does not, please contact Tracy Donhardt, NFM Board member, at tracy.donhardt@newfacultymajority.infoThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. In addition, contact Tracy if you have other questions about the site or how to enroll. SASid also has set up a dedicated customer service phone line for NFM members. That number is shown on the SASid home page directly under the “get a quote” box.

NFM hopes this health insurance helps you and other adjunct and contingent faculty who are more often than not excluded from their university’s benefit programs. Stay tuned for future improvements and additional plan offerings, including dental and life insurance.
