High on the AAUP's Agenda: Deciding How to Fill a Vacancy at the Top

Gary Rhoades formally resigned on Monday as general secretary of the American Association of University Professors, and it appears likely that the organization, which holds its annual conference here later this week, will redefine the job over the summer and fall months and put off selection of a permanent replacement until next year.

Gary returns to his teaching role in the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Arizona.
During the past couple of years, I've had the opportunity to rub shoulders with Gary on the Advisory Board of the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining, headquartered at CUNY. I found him to be a man of intelligence, wit, and good will. Having little insight into the workings of the AAUP, I don't know why his contract wasn't renewed earlier this year. But my sense is that it's the AAUP's loss and U of A's gain.
Gary, I wish you well.
