Dear Jim,
As Congress gets closer to a showdown on federal spending, we need every member of Congress to know that any deal cutting benefits for Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security is unacceptable. And we need to send a clear message that the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% must end on schedule at the end of the year.
That's why on Monday — just before Congress heads back to Washington, D.C. — MoveOn.org members and other progressives are organizing hundreds of Fiscal Showdown events at congressional offices nationwide.
We'll gather to issue our demands, share powerful personal stories, and make sure that Congress hears our message loud and clear: No more tax cuts for the top 2%, and no deals that cut Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security benefits.
The so-called "lame-duck session" between the election and the end of the year is when politicians feel the least accountable to voters — and when they are the most likely to push through massively unpopular legislation like a plan that does huge damage to middle class families by cutting benefits.
Negotiations are already happening and Congress has a few weeks in session, so now's the time for all of us to speak out.
We need to unite Senate Democrats against any cuts to earned benefit programs, and put the heat on House Republicans for holding tax breaks for 98% of us hostage in an attempt to extort further tax giveaways for the wealthy.
The rallies on Monday will help increase pressure on Congress to do what's right by showing the politicians in DC that folks back home are fired up to protect Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits and end the Bush tax cuts for the richest Americans.
