Institutional Policies and Procedures
Thursday, February 24, 2011
12 pm – 2 pm ET / 9 am – 11 am PT
Register Today! Learn the policies that your institution needs to effectively respond to potentially dangerous students on your campus.
Program Description:
Colleges and universities face a number of practical and legal challenges when dealing with distressed and dangerous students. Sometimes students will take voluntary leaves of absence due to mental health issues. In other situations, a student's condition may be so serious that the institution will determine that an involuntary or administrative leave is necessary for the safety of the student and/or the community. It is critical that colleges and universities evaluate whether they have all the necessary policies in place to address these potentially dangerous situations on campus before they occur.
This virtual seminar will address policies that most institutions currently have - or should have - to effectively deal with distressed or dangerous students. The program will also examine Department of Education regulatory requirements applicable to such policies and relevant OCR guidance and letter rulings.
Topics covered will include:
* Code of student conduct, interim suspension and voluntary leave policies
* Threat assessment, mandatory assessment and involuntary leave policies
o Individualized and Objective Assessment
o Due Process Requirements: Full due process versus minimal due process
* Readmission Policies and Procedures
* Other Supporting Policies
o Emergency Response Protocol
o Reporting Protocols or Resources
o Disability Accommodations/Grievance Procedures
o FERPA Policies
o Anti-Bullying Policies
o Computer Use Policies
