Has the voting rights law outlived its usefulness?

The Supremes seem to think so.  They have signaled as much in recent cases, and now plan to revisit the issue.

I will only point out two cautions:

1.  In the 1990s, the same was said about laws passed in the 1930s and aimed at regulating Wall Street. Some key laws and rules were repealed.  Just look where that got us in 2008.

2.  The problems this election --- voter ID laws, most notably --- suggest that there are those who would still very much like to disenfranchise the poor and people of color.
