Profiteers have always exploited every crisis and human hardship. Qui tam actions were invented during the Civil War by a frustrated president and congress to try to curb wartime profiteering. Retailers often have engaged in price gouging both in the face of and in the wake of natural disasters. Drug companies gouge the sick for the drugs they need, and excuse themselves by pleading the high cost of drug development. Looters abound after a hurricane hits. All are examples of human greed... and I suppose none of us is completely immune.
During the Sandy aftermath, clothing brands have tweeted short-term sales. Politicians tweeting "breaking news" just to get our attention. One such A-hole resigned after apologizing.
Exploitation by Tweet: the more things change the more they remain the same.
