Subject: Importance of ATTITUDE

Good Evening,

I volunteer and facilitate an Employment Support Group (ESG). Our mission is to work together to renew hope and build the faith that is needed to continue the job search in order to meet physical, emotional, practical and spiritual needs. Over 70 people have found employment and the majority are over 50 years old.

With more than 45 years of H.R., plant management, general management and sales experience my observations lead me to conclude that one of the most important factors is attitude and mind set. I know there are a lot of reasons why older workers find the job market difficult and sometime impossible. So I don’t want to minimize other factors in the job search.

I have watched people come into our support group very angry and have given up! Within a short period of time they begin to change. As the kids say the get motivated, focused and their attidude begins to change in a very positive way. I often say “a job seekers attidude is shown on the sleeve of their shirt.” We can’t hide our attitude in the employment process.

Charles Swindoll wrote: “The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company…a church…a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you…we are in charge of our Attitudes.”

The ESG is supported by my local church, Calvary Assembly of God in Wilmington DE. In addition we facilitate the exchange of ideas and suggestions for employment between participants in the support group. Provide a supportive environment to share information. Provide the technical and practical knowledge to assist in job search. A few examples would include: practice interview techniques, resume reviews, networking, preparing for a job interview, world of work, barriers, job leads, employer expectations, and job hunting tips, listening skills plus many more employment topics. Check out our ob Support Main Page for lots of good articles: http://www.calvarywilmington.org/jobs

Our ESG meets every Tuesday morning from 8:00am to 9:30am. If you live in the area, please stop by. ALL ARE WELCOME!

Thank You.

Best Regards, Len Deane Jr.
