New York sanctions same-sex marriages

Last week New York became the sixth, and the largest, state to sanction gay and lesbian marriages.

The New York Times says that the victory doesn't necessarily signal a tipping point in the effort to win the right to marriage for gays and lesbians nationally.

But the Human Rights Campaign, the leading advocate for equal rights for gays and lesbians, says:

NEW YORK MARRIAGE EQUALITY
In a history-making, bipartisan vote, the New York Senate on June 24 passed a widely popular marriage equality bill after the most aggressive state legislative campaign in the history of the LGBT rights movement. New York will become the sixth state, plus the District of Columbia, where same-sex couples can legally marry.

Governor Cuomo has signed the bill, and the law will take effect on July 24.
