A ball to die for?

A fan fell to his death while catching a ball at a Texas Rangers game in Arlington, Texas last night.

I feel sorry for him and his family. What a senseless way to die! Truth is that I have never understood the human passion for celebrities, that results in the billions spent every year on pro sports and other ever-more-expensive forms of entertainment. And what made that ball so special it was worth hanging over a 14 -foot wall to catch it?

A couple of years ago, my Bro and I were at an Iron Pigs minor league baseball game in Allentown, PA. A foul ball came our way. The guy two seats to my left leapt up. It came off his fingers and landed in the empty seat between us. Reflexively, I reached out and put my hand on it. Before I knew, this bozo was bending my fingers back to get the ball away from me. Give me a break!(No pun intended.)

For my part, I'd sooner see a bunch of kids play a good game of Little League baseball than spend a couple of hundred bucks on a MLB game. I'd rather go to my local bar and hear a good local band, rather than paying a couple of hundred bucks to see a rock concert. One reason is the knuckleheads, such as those mentioned above, that I encounter in every such crowd these days.

All right... yeh... I'm getting old and cranky. That's part of it. But another part is that people have no clue how to behave these days. Been to a movie lately? Did the folks behind you talk and rattle their cellophane wrappers as if they were at home in their own living room? Then maybe you see what I mean.

And who thought Canadians --- those ever so courteous northern neighbors whose thoughtful behavior was actually lampooned in the film "Canadian Bacon"

would go on a rampage, as they did after the Stanley Cup final game?

It saddens me to see it... especially when I consider that my generation in the 1960s may have had a lot to do with the decline of decorum on this continent. You doubt the conenction? Then check out:
