Pakistan's lawyers badly divided over death of local official

Pakistan's lawyers, when they are united, are a powerful force in that country. United, they rose up when the former military regime fired the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. They were highly influential in forcing regime change.

But now they are terribly divided over the controversy involving the woman condemned to death for allegedly blaspheming, an the murder by a police official of the provincial governor who took her side. Those on the religious right are actually arguing that the killer should be exonerated. This is an inexcusable position for any lawyer to take. Meanwhile those who are more liberal are reportedly afraid to protest.
